The Solano collection channels the serenity of monastic desert architecture into a foundation of absolute calm. Twelve rugs abstract the elemental forces of arid landscapes and quiet minimal structures: the parallel grain of board-formed concrete drifting softly off true, sediment strata expressed as stacked bands of warm neutrals, slow gradients that mimic raked sun moving across a bare wall.
The palette is earthen and restrained. Frozen sand, caliche and muted clay terracotta meet rare notes of basalt depth and a single thread of onyx, set into pale sandstone and soft bone plaster. Subtle irregularities in pile height capture the faint relief of sediment layers, so each piece carries the quiet presence of raw earth.
Every rug is hand-knotted in Kathmandu from pure New Zealand wool, with fine silk reserved for the barest hint of light inside a shadow gradient. Knot densities range from 100 to 180 knots per square inch. Solano asks nothing of a room except to give it a timeless, grounded warmth.
The Collection
Burnt Sand
Like the slow shift of shadow across a raked field, this piece captures the subtle depth found in open ground. The base is an earthen tan that holds light differently throughout the day, a single quiet hue that never feels flat due to the natural variance of the hand-spun yarn.
Raked Shadow
Like water eroding stone, a subtle directional relief defined by variations in pile height catches the light. This creates a surface that seems to shift, revealing new dimensions and a rich texture through the day.
Earthen Monolith
Imagine the silent, deep resonance within a structure of poured concrete and rammed earth. This handwoven floor piece materializes that heavy quiet, presenting a fields of charcoal and deep slate tones that suggest layered rock strata or a single, monolithic volume.
Still Water
Like the slow shift of shadow across a massive concrete slab, this rug evokes the deep stillness of a desert cistern. The compositional hook is the material itself, a single rich tone of indigo hand-dyed to create depth and nuance that cannot be replicated.
Poured Concrete
Like the subtle grain left by poured formwork concrete, this hand-knotted piece captures the slow drift of shadow across a vast, pale field. Its composition relies on shifts in mineral honesty: cool greys, chalky whites, and the deeper tone of wet aggregate.
Distant Strata
Composition begins with the slow drift of shadow across a vast, pale field, an expansive surface where natural, undyed fibers create subtle, linear shifts in tone rather than defined patterns. The surface is not flat: the dense hand-knotting introduces micro-textures, like fine sand shifts or the grain of board-formed concrete.
Frozen Mesa
Imagine the stillness of a vast, salt-encrusted playa at dawn, before the first warmth fractures the light. This rug captures that silent, pale expanse in a field of cooler earthen neutral.
Dusted Stone
Consider the subtle, matte variance found on a raw, sand-blasted stone surface: not uniform color, but a complex tapestry of tonal shifts, fine grit, and the quiet passage of natural light across its expanse. This hand-knotted composition captures that mineral variance, rejecting flat uniformity for a deeply textured surface of close earthen neutrals.
Oasis Deep
Imagine the slow, quiet moment as light descends into a deep canyon pool, touching only the center while shadows pool around the edges, rendered in hand-knotted wool and silk. The central field is a vast expanse of cool, deep blue, like still water holding the sky, bordered subtly by a rich, charcoal grey that grounds the composition in shadow.
Desert Plinth
Imagine the raw, textured concrete of a monastic cell, its surface holds the memory of board forms and the wear of time, rendered in a language of hand-tied fiber. This composition distills that quietude, translating the deep tonal density of a poured stone anchor into a tactile expanse.
Arid Calm
Like the slow shift of pale sediment on a dry creek bed, Arid Calm captures quiet through varied yarn height. The composition avoids central patterning, instead scattering subtle shifts across a vast surface that feels like sun-bleached desert floor.
Linear Hush
Imagine the trace of a single, precise line pulled across a vast, pale concrete plinth, where the formwork leaves its faint grain. Linear Hush is an exercise in that specific stillness.
